Supporting you through the Criminal Justice System
Emotional and practical support to survivors of rape, sexual abuse and assault and domestic violence who have reported to the police or are considering reporting to the police.
Independent Domestic/Sexual Violence Advocate
The role of a Independent Domestic/Sexual Violence Advocates (IDSVAs) is to provide both emotional and practical support to survivors of rape, sexual abuse and assault and domestic violence who have reported to the police or are considering reporting to the police.
Our main role is to support an individual around the criminal justice process and provide information about the legal process and your rights. We respect your right to choose what is best for you and we work independently of the police and are not legal advisors.
We know that reporting to the police can feel extremely daunting and we work at your pace to help you make informed choices that are right for you.
Your IDSVA will support you in a non-judgmental way to address your needs and will help you ensure that other organisations also provide you with the right kind of support.
We provide an Independent Sexual Violence Advocate service to survivors of all genders over 16 across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. We also provide a specific Independent Domestic Violence Advocate service to male survivors of domestic abuse in Buckinghamshire.
Our IDSVAs can help with a range of support depending on your needs and what kind of support you may require, they can:
- Provide information on the Criminal Justice Process and what you can expect if you decide to report to the police
- Attend interviews and court with you if you wish.
- Provide information on health services and attend appointments with you if you wish.
- Help you to think about your safety and how this can be improved.
- Listen to your experience and give you emotional support
- Support you if you need to apply for criminal injuries compensation
Survivors Voices
“When I started I had no idea who I was, why I felt the way I did or how to handle the relentless feelings of guilt, sadness, anger and pain. I recognise the person I am today and I am proud of her, it has changed my life for all the right reasons.”
